One of my earliest and most cherished childhood memories was walking down my grandmother’s coconut plantation in Mangalore, where she had planted trees 60 years ago. She passed on the baton to my mother who lovingly cared for these “three-generation trees,” and here I am doing my best to nurture and preserve them for future generations. The trees reflect the generational bond that exists within my family. As these symbols of longevity approach the end of their natural cycle, there is a pressing need to address the challenges posed by climate change. Hence my motivation to obtain a master’s degree in the field. In addition to providing me with the necessary tools to find solutions to combat global concerns and forge a future where both nature and humans can flourish, MES will allow me to pursue my passion with a desire for a cleaner, greener planet.
During my education, my curriculum exposed me to packaging processes, sustainable packaging and environmentally friendly processes, and recycling packaging. But this was a stark contrast with what I was seeing around me. A landmark project was creating natural inks from husks of coconut plants and tamarind seeds and successfully filing a patent for the ink made entirely from 100% organic materials! This project deepened my understanding of sustainable innovation while reinforcing my commitment to finding eco-friendly solutions to everyday problems.
My interest was further solidified while working as a packaging technologist at India’s leading sustainable packaging company. I came across clients working with natural products to provide sustainable packaging solutions. I have first-hand witnessed the problems these companies face particularly in scaling and influencing companies to invest in these solutions. On the other hand, working at a start-up run by women and part of a largely women-led team, I’ve gained invaluable insights into the power of breaking gender stereotypes and fostering a collaborative, inclusive environment. This has allowed me to become a jack-of-all-trades, developing a well-rounded understanding of all the different aspects of a business and has inculcated a sense of deep understanding and accountability towards stakeholders.
With business in my DNA, I founded a consulting firm promoting a mindset fostering greater environmental consciousness. I learned that effective communication is key to bridge gaps and devise more effective and comprehensive solutions that benefit all stakeholders. I also learned that a bottom-up approach tailored to the people at the ground root including their inputs is the most novel way to ensure that changes are accepted.
Having worked on multiple projects and gaining crucial industry experience my goal going forward is to work as a sustainability consultant or environmental data analyst helping businesses adopt green practices. My long-term vision is to start a sustainable materials company offering innovative, high-quality, affordable solutions enabling companies to reduce their environmental footprint. I was born in the beautiful coastal town of Mangaluru, known not just for its ports and beaches but also as an important agricultural hub. Agriculture plays a crucial role in the region’s economy, providing livelihoods to a significant portion of the population. It was probably owing to this early influence that has inspired me to start an alternative materials company that will source Agri-waste from farmers and convert it to sustainable, biodegradable packaging solutions, particularly through mitigating agricultural waste in landfills. Having a degree in packaging and working in this industry I am aware of a growing demand for sustainable products. I aim to reduce environmental pollution, provide income opportunities for local farmers, and address pressing waste management issues.
At University, I plan to build on my background by exploring industrial ecology and sustainable business practices. Sustainability is not about numbers or technical solutions, at its core is about empathy and compassion for the people, communities, and most importantly the planet. The interdisciplinary curriculum will equip me with the technical, analytical, and policy-driven skills needed to address these complex issues. This corse will provide opportunities to explore new interests amidst an environment of learning and innovation. Additionally, opportunities for professional development, interdisciplinary courses, and interactions with alumni will allow me to gain practical experience and build the right industry alliances.
Alongside the experienced faculty, a diverse peer group, I will be well-equipped to make meaningful changes in the mindset of people. I am committed to leveraging the resources to drive systemic, long-lasting change and contribute to a more sustainable future.
